Advice: Photography - Consejo: Fotografía II

It took a while, didn't have much time to write this post. Maybe tomorrow it can be a little bit longer! Anyway, hope you all enjoy it

Me ha costado un poco, no he tenido mucho tiempo para escribir este post. Quizás mañana pueda ser un poco más extenso. De cualquier manera, espero que lo disfrutéis

6-Black and White - Blanco y Negro

I’m going to say something that may sound obvious, but it is not sometimes. Black and White, means BLACK and WHITE. What makes these photographs beautiful is the contrast. A picture with loads of “greys” is not beautiful. If you want to try this technique, make sure you have this contrast, whether you have it in the natural shot or you are gonna do it in “post-production” (Photoshop or Lightroom). I remembered my first black and white shots as something I didn’t understand. Why were mine less special than others? It took a while to realise something as simple as this is. Check this pictures, can you see what I mean?

Voy a decir algo que quizás suene obvio, pero no siempre lo es. Blanco y negro significa BLANCO y Negro. Lo que hace bonitas estas fotos es el contraste. Una foto con muchos “grises” no es bonita. Si quieres intentar esta técnica, asegúrate que tengas este contraste, bien en la foto original, o conseguido en post-producción (Photoshop o Lightroom). Recuerdo que mis primeras fotos en blanco y negro eran algo que no entendía. ¿Por qué las mías eran menos especiales que las de otros? Me costó un tiempo darme cuenta de algo tan sencillo. Mira estas fotos, ¿puedes apreciar lo que quiero decir?

You see? No whites at all, and even if it could be a good photograph, there's something with it that looks wrong, right?

Lo ves? No hay blancos, y aún siendo que podría ser una buena foto, hay algo que queda raro, no?

7- What everybody sees, but just don’t pay attention to - Lo que todo el mundo ve pero no le presta atención:

I don’t travel much (I wish!) so I can’t take photographs of the best landscapes the man has ever known or so. I only have my city for most of the year so, how can I make my pictures special if my place is not that special? I remembered once, in summer, I took my camera and I walked through the eldest part of the town, and started taking pictures of almost everything that looked old and broken. Everybody sees these things, but they don’t pay attention to them. These things have become everyone’s routine, so why would anyone see any of those things as special? Pay attention to everything, looked for the details. You don’t have to go far for the best shot, the best shot might be around the corner.

No viajo mucho (¡Ojalá!) así que no puedo sacar fotos de los mejores y más espectaculares paisajes que el hombre jamás haya conocido. La mayor parte del año, solo “dispongo” de mi ciudad, así que, ¿cómo puedo hacer que mis fotos sean especiales si mi ciudad no es tan especial? Recuerdo que una vez, en verano, cogí mi cámara y anduve por la parte vieja del pueblo y empecé a sacar fotos de prácticamente cualquier cosa que tuviese aspecto de vieja y rota. Todo el mundo ve estas cosas, pero no les prestan atención. Son parte de la rutina de todos, así que, ¿por qué iba nadie a verlas como algo especial? Presta atención a todo, busca los detalles. No tienes que irte lejos para la mejor foto, la mejor foto puede estar esperándote a la vuelta de la esquina

8-The number 3 – El número 3

I don’t know what it is with number 3, that if something appears repeated three times in a photograph, it gets our attention better than if it is repeated twice or four times (unless it is a pattern). Seriously, this has been studied! Though I think nobody got a real conclusion of why this is this way. Search for examples if you want, and check by you own.

No sé qué es lo que tiene el número 3, que si algo aparece repetido tres veces en una fotografía, consigue nuestra atención mejor que si se repite dos o cuatro veces (a no ser que sea un patrón). De verdad, ¡ha sido estudiado! Aunque no creo que nadie haya llegado a una verdadera conclusión sobre por qué esto es así. Busca ejemplos si quieres, y compruébalo.

9-Patterns – Patrones

This has been mentioned before. I said something repeated three times is more interesting, but, if you repeat it several times, then you get a pattern.  Normally you find these in buildings, roofs, walls with bricks, etc (you’ll se it in the example). Sometimes, it is not only the pattern, but whatever you use to “break” it, without breaking the “armony”. Try different ways of reflecting one of these patterns, different angles, and try to experience new sensations.

Esto ya se ha mencionado antes. He dicho que algo repetido tres veces es más interesante; sin embargo, si lo repites muchas veces, entonces obtienes un patrón. Normalmente los puedes encontrar en edificios, tejados, una pared con ladrillos, etc (lo verás en el ejemplo). Pero otras veces no es solo el patrón, sino lo que usas para “romper” el patrón sin romper la “armonía”. Busca nuevas formas de reflejar estos patrones, distintos ángulos y trata de experimentar nuevas sensaciones

10-Panoramics - Panorámicas

It’s not a real advice actually. Haven’t you ever wanted to take a photograph of something that’s so big that one simple photo is not enough? Well, take many, and paste them! But is highly recommended a tripod! If not, even if you think you’ve taken them correctly, maybe you haven’t, and later, in “post-production” (photoshop, lightroom, or whatever you are used to using if you are) you may see that shadows don’t fix, light is incorrect, etc. Of course a tripod is not a MUST, but it’ll help avoiding later dissapointments. For example, I used 17 photos for this paranoramic shot, do you like it?

No es un verdadero consejo de hecho. ¿Nunca has deseado hacer una fotografía de algo que es tan grande que simplemente una foto no es suficiente? ¡Bueno, haz varias y ponlas todas juntas! Pero es muy recomendable que tengas un trípode. Si no lo tienes, puede que incluso aunque pienses que las has sacado correctamente, quizás no haya sido así, y después, en “post-producción” (photoshop, lightroom o cualquier programa que estés acostumbrad@ a usar, si lo estás) puedes ver sombras que no encajas, que la luz es incorrecta, etc. Por supuesto, el trípodo no es algo obligado, pero te ahorrará alguna decepción. Por ejemplo, yo utilicé 17 fotos para esta panorámica, ¿te gusta?

 

Not only you may use it for something “big”, though. Even the smallest things can be good candidates for a panoramic, maybe just for a fine effect, to give new sensations, etc. For example, I used this one to give specific sensations with the sand:

Pero no siempre lo usarás para algo “grande”. Incluso las cosas más pequeñas pueden ser buenos candidatos para una panorámica, quizás solo por un efecto agradable, para dar nuevas sensaciones…Por ejemplo, yo utilicé esta para dar sensaciones específicas con la arena

I know the images are very big, I just wanted you to see them properly!
